1998 Linea Art Fair, Gent, Belgium

Linea-Art
That same year, another incredibly exciting event took place — the Maritime Gallery participated in the European art festival Linea-Art in Ghent, Belgium.
While Radu and I were living in Bruges at the Hotel De Medici and working on a mural painting, we weren’t staying in a regular room but in a guest cottage with an office on the ground floor. It was there, among the promotional materials, that I stumbled upon a brochure for Flanders Expo, a Belgian exhibition company. Along with various industrial trade shows, they were advertising the Linea-Art fair. I brought the brochure back with me to Odessa, and my daughter Rada and I wrote a letter to them. They replied and sent us the terms of participation. I showed them to Nikolai Panteleimonovich, and being the extraordinary man he was, he immediately agreed that the gallery should take part in the event.
If you can imagine the unbelievable logistical challenges of shipping paintings from Ukraine back then, this venture would have likely been impossible due to the cost. However, some of my artwork from a previous exhibition was still stored at the Hotel De Medici, so I decided to use those pieces to test the waters and make our debut at the festival.
Our daughter Rada, who turned 17 that year and already spoke fluent English, became my partner in this adventure by her father’s decision. Naturally, for her, this was a life-altering turning point. I must say, the whole experience left a profound impression on me as well.
We stayed with Steven, a young man Radu and I had met while working at the Hotel De Medici. He happily welcomed us into his home and helped us with everything. Every morning, he would drive us from Bruges to Ghent, and in the evening, he would pick us up and bring us back.
